Description
Sir John Woodroffe, a British judge in Calcutta, unveiled Tantra to Western readers under the name Arthur Avalon. His Principles of Tantra renders the Tantratattva, a Sanskrit digest of Tantric teaching, into English. Ritual, mantra, and the worship of Shakti, the goddess as power, form its core.
Woodroffe defends Tantra against missionary and scholarly contempt, presenting it as a serious path of worship and knowledge. His work began the modern study of the subject. The evidence notes no public-domain text has yet been located for this entry. Avalon's pioneering exposition still marks the point where the West began to listen.
