Description
James Darmesteter, the great French orientalist, translated the Zend-Avesta, the scriptures of Zoroastrianism, into French. His Le Zend-Avesta presents the hymns, laws, and rituals of ancient Persia with a scholar's full notes. Zarathustra's religion reaches European readers here in one of its classic scholarly dressings.
Darmesteter treated the texts as a historian, dating layers and tracing ideas with care. French readers gained what Legge and Muller gave the English: a whole canon, weighed and explained. Verified from a pre-1930 edition, the work still serves students of Persian religion. It stands among the monuments of nineteenth-century Oriental scholarship.
