Description

Wilhelm Dilthey published his Einleitung in die Geisteswissenschaften in German in 1883. The title means an introduction to the human sciences. Dilthey argued that fields like history, law, and the study of culture need their own ground. They cannot just borrow the methods of physics or biology.

He drew a firm line between the natural sciences and the human sciences. Nature, he held, we explain from outside, while human life we understand from inside. That split shaped how later scholars defended history as its own kind of knowledge. The book became a founding charter for the human sciences. Standard English versions came much later.
