Description
Tropical Africa's politics filled a broad CIA survey dated April 1966. By then, most of the region's states were newly independent, and several had already seen coups. The paper steps back from single countries to judge the whole region's direction.
Surveys like this one weighed one-party rule, military takeovers, and outside influence from East and West. They helped Washington set priorities across a continent changing month by month. The value today lies in the wide lens: dozens of young states assessed together. It captures a moment when Africa's postcolonial path still seemed open and uncertain.
