Description
Virginia Woolf published The Common Reader in 1925, gathering essays she had written for journals over the previous decade. The title states her creed: these pieces address the ordinary reader who reads for pleasure, not the scholar.
Essays take up Jane Austen, the modern novel, the Elizabethans, and the art of reading itself. 'Modern Fiction' argues that the novel must catch life as it falls on the mind, not as plots arrange it. Woolf's voice is light, exact, and quietly radical. The collection defined a new way of writing about books, intimate and free, and it is still a model of the essay.
