Description
Ovid, the Roman poet, wrote the Metamorphoses as one long poem made of stories about change. Gods, heroes, and ordinary people turn into animals, trees, stones, and stars, often as reward or punishment. The version here is Brookes More's English translation, published in 1919.
Readers meet Daphne turning into a laurel tree as she flees Apollo, and Arachne changed into a spider after she outweaves Athena. Story leads into story for fifteen books, from the making of the world down to Rome. For centuries, most writers and painters learned Greek and Roman myth from Ovid's telling, and his fast, witty style still carries readers through.
