Description
A. E. Waite played detective in The Book of Black Magic and of Pacts, published in 1898. He surveys the grimoires one by one: the Key of Solomon, the Grimorium Verum, the Grand Grimoire, and their kin. For each he asks what the rituals actually say, apart from the legends around them.
Waite prints rites of evocation and pact in detail, then judges them with a scholar-magician's dry scorn. His critical sorting shaped how the next century read the whole grimoire shelf. Verified from the 1919 edition, the book remains a sharp, skeptical guide through magic's darkest library.
