Description
Francis Barrett published The Magus, or Celestial Intelligencer, in London in 1801, and English occultism revived around it. Barrett compiled natural magic, magnetism, Kabbalah, alchemy, and the evocation of spirits into one grand summa, much of it drawn from Agrippa and older masters. His school of magic taught from the book.
Plates of talismans, circles, and spirit forms give the volume its famous look. Bulwer-Lytton studied it for his novels; the founders of the Golden Dawn studied it for their rites. Verified from the 1919 edition, Barrett's Magus remains the great English grimoire-compilation of the Romantic age.
