Description
Waite argued in The Secret Tradition in Freemasonry, volume one of 1911, that a hidden initiatory tradition runs behind the public life of the lodges. Rituals, grades, and symbols become, on his reading, the outer dress of an inner path toward divine union.
He pursues the claim through archives and rites with dogged learning. Other Masonic scholars hotly disputed his case, and the quarrel made the book famous. Waite writes as both insider and mystic, which is the source of its charm and its trouble. Verified from the 1919 edition, volume one made him Masonry's most debated scholar of his generation.
