Description
Hermann Jacobi translated the Jaina Sutras for volume forty-five of the Sacred Books of the East, and part two holds two major Jain scriptures. The Uttaradhyayana gives monastic discourses on the disciplined life. The Sutrakritanga argues against rival schools and defends the Jain path.
Jain teaching prizes non-violence above all, extending care to the smallest living things. Monks and nuns bind themselves to strict vows of truth, poverty, and harmlessness. Jacobi, a leading scholar of Jainism, equips the texts with full notes. Checked from the 1919 edition, part two completes the series' Jain canon for English readers.
