Description
W. B. Yeats's Poems gathers his early work, before the tower, the winding stair, and the great public poems of his later career. The Lake Isle of Innisfree, his most beloved lyric, imagines peace in a small cabin by a lakeshore, bean rows and a hive for the honeybee included. Faery courts, wandering Aengus, and Celtic twilight fill the surrounding pages.
Written in the dreamy, musical manner of the 1890s, the poems also carry the first stirrings of Yeats's occult symbolism and Irish nationalism. Readers meeting Yeats here see the foundation of modern English poetry's greatest career: a young Irishman inventing a mythology out of folklore, longing, and craft.
