Description
Niccolò Machiavelli wrote The Prince in 1513 after his fall from Florentine politics cost him office, freedom, and nearly his health under torture. Addressed to a Medici ruler, the manual asks how new princes gain and keep power in a dangerous Italy of rival states and foreign armies. His answers shocked Christendom.
Power, Machiavelli argues, is kept by being feared rather than loved when both cannot be had, promises are tools to be judged by outcomes, and fortune favors the bold who act. He describes power as it is practiced, not as moralists said it should be. Five centuries of argument over his name began with these chapters.
