Description
Sixty-six books, from Genesis to Revelation, make up the King James Bible, the English translation first published in 1611. King James ordered it, and teams of scholars worked from Hebrew and Greek texts. Their version held first place in English worship and letters for three hundred years.
Inside stand law, history, poetry, prophecy, the Gospels, and the letters of the early church. Its phrases passed into daily speech, from salt of the earth to a thorn in the flesh. Even readers who never open it for worship meet its language in law, song, and story. Few books have shaped a language so deeply.
