Description
A letter known as First Clement went from the church at Rome to the church at Corinth near the end of the first century. Tradition credits Clement, an early leader at Rome, as its author. It ranks among the oldest Christian writings outside the New Testament.
Corinth had thrown out its elders, and the letter urges the church to restore them and live in order and humility. It cites the Old Testament, the words of Jesus, and examples of envy and its harms. Early churches read it aloud beside scripture, and it shows how Christian leaders taught within living memory of the apostles.
