Description

King Chandakapali asks the sage Gheranda how a person can master the body and reach liberation, and the Gheranda Samhita records the answer. Gheranda lays out a sevenfold path, broader than the limbs of Patanjali. The teaching proceeds as a calm dialogue between king and sage.

Purification rites come first, then postures, then breath work, withdrawal of the senses, meditation, and final absorption. Each stage gets practical detail meant for use, not mere theory. The Samhita stands with the Hatha Yoga Pradipika among the root manuals of hatha yoga. The evidence notes no public-domain text has yet been located for this entry.
