Description

J. W. Etheridge published the second volume of his English Targums in 1865, finishing the Pentateuch begun in volume one. It covers Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy in the paraphrases of Onkelos and Jonathan ben Uzziel. These Aramaic versions were the people's Bible in the ancient synagogue.

Through the laws of sacrifice, the desert wanderings, and Moses' farewell speeches, the targums keep clarifying as they go. They explain hard commands, fill gaps in the story, and weave in teaching the rabbis prized. Etheridge's two volumes together made the whole Aramaic Torah open to English readers for the first time.
