Description
George Starkey was an American-born chymist, raised in Bermuda and trained at Harvard, who worked in London's alchemical circles. His Pyrotechny Asserted and Illustrated, published in 1658, defends alchemical practice against its scorners. Starkey taught the writer known as Philalethes, whose books spread his methods worldwide.
Pyrotechny, the art of fire, is Starkey's name for the furnace work by which metals and medicines are made and tested. He answers critics with experiments, weights, and furnaces rather than with riddles alone. The book shows the most skilled American-born chymist of the seventeenth century arguing for his craft in public.
