Description
Books three and four of the History of the Wars of Procopius tell how Belisarius won North Africa back from the Vandals. H. B. Dewing's Loeb translation of 1916 carries the text. Procopius sailed with the fleet in 533 and saw the campaign himself. His post as the general's secretary gave him the council tent view.
The fleet lands, the Vandals fall at Ad Decimum and Tricamarum, and Carthage opens its gates. Then the hard part starts: Moorish wars, mutinies, and a province that would not stay won. Procopius tells it with a soldier's eye for ground and luck. The Vandal kingdom, a century old, vanishes in a year of his telling.
