Description
George MacDonald, a Scots priest and poet, wrote this first of his great tales in 1858. He was then a young man, and the book broke new ground at a stroke. It tells of Anodos, a youth of one and twenty years, on the day he comes of age.
Anodos finds a gate in his room to Fairy Land and walks its woods and streams. Maids of ash and alder, a knight, and a dark shade mark his road of growth and loss. The book is the first great fantasy of the Victorian age, and it shaped C. S. Lewis.
