Description

Landor spent much of his life writing Imaginary Conversations, invented talks between great figures of the past. This 1933 selection gathers highlights of that huge work alongside a sampling of his poems. The contents pair Marcellus with Hannibal, Queen Elizabeth with Cecil, and Henry VIII with Anne Boleyn, among many others.

Kings, poets, and thinkers argue, confess, and reason across the centuries in Landor's stately prose. Pairs like Boccaccio with Petrarca and Diogenes with Plato show his range from statecraft to wit. He prized these dialogues above all his other work, and the selection gives new readers a fair taste of why.
