Description
Robert Louis Stevenson wrote this short, fierce tale in a burst of work in 1885, and it came out in 1886. He said the plot came to him in a dream, as much of his best work did. The sale of the book brought him fame and funds at a key time in his life.
A good London doctor, Henry Jekyll, finds a drug that frees the base self hid in him. That self, Edward Hyde, is small, foul, and free of all the bonds of good life. The tale made 'Jekyll and Hyde' a set phrase for the split self in all tongues.
