Description
Volume two of The Devil's Elixir brings Hoffmann's monk novel to its close, in R. P. Gillies's translation of 1824. Medardus, worn by crime and pursuit, faces the full truth of his family's curse. The double who has dogged him steps out of rumor into plain sight.
Confession, trial, and penance take the place of flight and disguise. Hoffmann untangles the knot of births, sins, and mistaken selves that drove the tale. The ending weighs guilt against grace in a haunted, Catholic frame. Read with volume one, the novel stands complete: a Gothic landmark on the divided self. Its fevered method later fed Poe, Stevenson, and many more.
