Description
Peter Kornbluh edited this National Security Archive briefing book, number 642, published on October 5, 2018. It marked thirty years since Chilean voters rejected General Augusto Pinochet in the historic 1988 "NO" vote. That vote ended his dictatorship and opened the way back to democracy.
Declassified United States documents in the posting showed that Pinochet had planned a violent second coup to keep his powers if he lost. Santiago's Museum of Memory and Human Rights added those documents to its permanent exhibition on the restoration of democracy. The record ties a dictator's secret plan to the public memory of how he fell.
