Description
Francine du Plessix Gray's 'The Politics of Salvation: II' examines the Harrisburg conspiracy case of the early 1970s. Prosecutors alleged a plot to kidnap Henry Kissinger, then the national security adviser. The piece is the second part of her study of the case and of the people pulled into it.
Among the figures Gray writes about are Boyd Douglas and Mary Chenoweth. The case grew out of the antiwar movement and the government's reliance on an informer inside it. Her account asks how far the evidence really went. It also asks what the prosecution revealed about the era's fear of dissent, and about the thin line between watching a movement and building a case against it.
