Description

Volume two of Heath's Euclid covers Books Five through Nine of the Elements. The 1908 translation moves from shapes toward numbers in these books. Proportion theory opens the volume with Book Five's masterly treatment.

Eudoxus's theory of proportion handles ratios of any magnitudes, even irrational ones. Books Seven through Nine then build arithmetic from definitions of number. Primes, even and odd numbers, and perfect numbers receive proofs. Euclid shows that the primes never run out in Book Nine. The bedrock of arithmetic was set down twenty-three centuries ago here. Heath's commentary connects each proposition to later mathematics with care.
