Description
Auguste Comte recast his positivist system as a catechism in 1852, and Richard Congreve Englished it in 1858. Positivism, Comte's philosophy, trusted science as the guide for modern society. Late in life he shaped it into a Religion of Humanity. The catechism form sets the teaching out as questions and answers.
A priest of the new faith instructs a woman who asks what positivism requires. Their talk covers worship, morals, family, and the order of society. Humanity itself, not God, stands as the object of devotion. The book shows Comte's system in its most personal form. It puzzled some followers and bound others closer.
