Description
American pilots were imprisoned in a cave in Houa Phan province, an April 1968 report states. Houa Phan, in Laos's northeast, is limestone country cut by rivers and caves. The Pathet Lao made their wartime capital in its cave systems at Vieng Xay.
Cave prisons were secure, hidden, and wretched: damp, dark, and cut off from news. Men held there could vanish from every list for years. A report placing pilots in a Houa Phan cave therefore carried special weight. It pointed later searchers toward the single province where the enemy's whole leadership also sheltered underground.
